Time for the Suburbs to Grow Up...

You have a night out planned.
These are your options:

A one stop complex  that offers restaurants and entertainment options including a  show theatre  but is located in a neighbouring community?
or .... an aging bingo hall ?

Quick-Where are you going to spend your money?

  1. I live in South Surrey and have so for many yrs. I know very few that look to a Casino for entertainment after all we know its called a stupid tax and I pay enough already thank you. Gateway wants to put in resturants ok, thats nice but we have quite a few already and frankly BC Casinos arent known for their food like they are in Vegas. Most likely the buffet would be the busiest as many broke gamblers would go for the cheap food. A Convention Center supposedly is desperately needed, really? If there is so much demand then shouldnt it stand on it own? Why build something that is a loser? I am sure that if so much demand is ther the City would build one as it would make sense wouldnt it? Is putting in a new community pool a money maker for the city? There is also the question of whether the Convention Center, Hotel and Theatre would ever get built. See Gateway is broke, has no money, carrying a burdensome amount of debt. It could be years before the rest would get built if ever. Fraser Downs was suppose to get a convention center and hotel too according to Mayor Watts and nothing yet, its been 10 yrs. THe council made a mistake approving slots for Newton and now they have to live with that consequence. Is it fair to push slots on to another community because of errors of the past?

Bruce Allen is off the mark on this one. Surrey Residents dont want it, who cares if its legal, we still dont want it. This time the people won, not a bullying Liberal government and its BCLC puppets. Why hasnt Fraser Downs expanded if the Surrey market is so under served? They could capitalize on this, its a quick 10-15 min drive from South Surrey, no bridges. Or Gateway could expand Langley to accommodate the surging demand for an entertainment complex. Again 20 Min away from South Surrey, no bridges. Are these guys dumb or am I missing something here? Surrey is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, seems are supposed lack of entertainment isnt having any affect on growth and no one is coming here for those reasons. We just want a safe place to live, to raise our families. I say to the proponents, move to Vegas or Atlantic City, they have all your looking for 24/7. Housing is cheap and take your pick of casinos to find work. We hear a casino is a great career choice so go to the biggest markets that offer the most.

  2. Currently Gateway's Bingo Country in Newton has the gaming license which would have moved to South Surrey along with the now defunct casino. Council has already approved slots for Bingo Country and there are more on the way. So it makes sense to put the 100 million dollar entertainment complex in a location that city council has deemed appropriate for slots and gaming.

South Surrey doesn't have to worry about a casino in their backyards anymore.
As for South Newton- well, we'd welcome a 100 million dollar investment in our neighbourhood.

    1. sadly if that happened I believe that would just add more fuel to the troubles Newton has. The federal government gives billions to the Natives and they are still a troubled people. YOu cant just throw people money, they need to understand how to use it and control otherwise it controls you. I see it South Surrey to where rich kids get whatever they want and they dont know how to handle it and it creates problems.
